For an expert entrepreneur, I believe, this is an important subject.
Starting a business selling your services as an expert is no easy task. Firstly, we have to be brave enough to take the leap and then, once we have, deal with everything that is thrown at us. I’ve yet to meet anyone for whom it was straightforward and ‘easy’.
Even for super competent and super successful individuals, transitioning to marketing YOURSELF and convincing prospects that YOU have the answers and they can depend on YOU to deliver the transformation they desperately need, is a lot to deal with!
And it is here that most people will run into their shadow self.
For a long time, they may not know it. It’s possible to think that the dip in energy and enthusiasm is just burnout from ‘going-at-it’ with all they’ve got. Often it is, but it’s also about what you do in those moments, how we react and what you decide it means about us.
Often we won’t notice the decision we’ve made about ourselves. We’ve probably made it (or a theme of it) continually throughout our lives so we believe it because that is our model of the world.
That is our shadow.
The challenges we have, how people respond to us, the decisions we make about what those things mean and what we are capable of, is our shadow self.
And it can feel so familiar – it is so familiar – that when we’re in the shadow self we don’t even notice. It’s just life as we know it. It’s just a bad day. It’s just a bad season. We’re just struggling right now.
But is that the truth?
In this informative talk, Nicola explains the shadow-self and how it manifests in our lives and what we can do about it. In my introduction, I forgot to tell my own story of making the decision to work with Nicola and why I chose the title of this talk to be ‘Are you outrunning your shadow self?’
When I first had a one-to-one session with Nicola, I was feeling “ok” about things. Probably a 7/10 that day, but I was coming out of a period of being consistently 3/10, if I am honest.
I didn’t want to commit to the investment. So that day, I said no. But a few days later, as I was approaching a task, I heard myself talk. I heard my self-imposed limitation and in that moment I knew that was my shadow self.
And I realised, that though today, at that moment, I felt like a 7, there was no way I was going to be able to outrun myself. I wasn’t going to stay at a 7 no matter how much I strived.
I couldn’t afford to live slip back anymore. So I called Nicola and got started. If you’re not sure what a shadow is or if you have one, listen to this talk. If you’re concerned you’re not managing to outrun your shadow self and achieve the results you’re looking for – this is the work.
And as a testimonial for Nicola, just writing this blog and starting our new TEE community, is the result of healing my wounds and finding my potential? What do I mean? Have a listen!
